Grades will be determined by your writing, participation, tests, and research paper. There will be
four (4) essays, two (2) tests, a creative writing project, and a major research paper.

Essays (4) 10 points each
Poetry Project 10 points
Tests (2) 5 points each
Research Paper 40 point total
Research cards 5 points
Bibliography 5 points
Rough Draft 10 points
Final Draft 20 points




You are expected to read, write, and think.  You are expected to make connections between ideas and write about them in the assigned mode.  You are expected to do your own writing without assistance, except from me in class.  You need to come prepared to class with the comletion of any homework.

Expect in class:  Classes will include lecture, discussions, library research, group work, in-class essay writing, and films.  You will write your essays using correct grammar and usage.

All writing courses at Paris Junior College emphasize the basic skills of writing, reading, and critical thinking and analysis.  Each course in the program is designed to help students develop positive attitudes toward communication skills and toward themselves as writers.  English 1302 occupies a central place in the sequence of courses that make up the PJC writing program.  English 1302 builds upon the writing, reading, and thinking skills developed in English 1301 to further refine students' skills and abilities in writing, reading, critical thinking and analysis.

The skills learned in English 1302 will also prepare students for diverse writing tasks in other courses and in the work world.  Students will learn to develop papers around a central idea.  They can use this technique for term papers, essays, tests, or position papers that they might write for such courses as history, psychology, government, or science.  They can also apply the same technique to write a clearly focused report for a supervisor or client.  Additionally, students will learn to adjust their writing processes to various time contraints.  This skill will help them cope with essay tests and term papers, with a report that must be on a supervisor's disk the next day, and with an analysis of a  year-long project.


Goals and Requirements of the Course

Course Description:  The Paris Junior College Catalog describes this course as:  A continuation of ENGL 1301.  Emphasis on critical reading, competent writing, vocabulary building, and use of library.  Assigned literary study, library readings, research essay, and themes.

Prerequisite:  The Paris Junior College Catalog states:  ENGL 1301. Core Curriculum is satisfied for Written Curriculum.

Purpose:  The course is a composition and rhetoric course designed to improve thinking, reading, analysis, and writing skills.  It will emphasize the aims -- the "why" -- and the modes -- the "how" -- of composition as they apply to the communication process.  Assignments will include pre-writing activities, essay writing, editing, revision, oral discussion, group work, and reading of novels, as well as lectures.  Home assignments will include readings and exercises from the texts plus essay writing.  The major portion of the course will be devoted to writing and will include documented papers when appropriate.  The close of the course will focus upon reading and discussion of assigned novels.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will

         1. Be able to identify, arrange and evaluate the effectiveness of a thesis statement.

         2. Be able to identify Standard Written English (SWE) and apply correct forms of English most widely accepted as clear and proper.

         3. Be able to identify the specific parts of an essay, distinguish appropriate modes of communicating an idea, and use transitional words and phrases effectively.
