Gemology Lab Procedures (Protocol for Gem Handling)
Gemology lab stones and stone sets will be individually issued to the student for class laboratory identification work. The student will sign for a stone packet, as is needed.
At no time are any stones to be removed from the Gemology classroom.
Gemology students are allotted one (1) packet of gems to be identified at a time.
All stones issued to the student remain the property of Paris Junior College- and is the student’s responsibility to return them to the instructor.
The swapping or sharing of stones between students is not allowed. It is the responsibility of the student originally issued the stones to return them to the instructor.
A stone will be considered lost, if by the end of class day it has not been found. The student will be responsible to pay the current replacement value of any stone that is lost while in his possession. (Any money paid by the student will be refunded if the stone is found in the classroom at a later date.)
Any stones that are misplaced or dropped on the floor in the classroom, must immediately be reported to the gemology instructor.
Protocol for a misplaced gem is to inform everyone in the classroom and work collectively to locate the gem ASAP.
This policy is to insure that the stone is not stepped on or damaged by another student, or accidentally carried out on someone’s shoe sole.
Honesty is of the utmost importance in the jewelry and gemology industry. The theft of any stone can seriously and permanently damage a student’s professional reputation.
